Playing in the Snow
This weekend a snowstorm hit New York City, and as my son impatiently waited Friday morning for the snow to come, we decided to make snow from the comfort of staying inside. This recipe is from the December 2025 Highlights High Five Magazine, which my son first received a subscription to two years ago, and he's still super into it. Highly recommend!
Usually the magazine's suggested crafts are the bane of my existence because I lack the mental energy to gather up the suggested supplies, which we usually don't have; however, making snow is super easy and only calls for two ingredients: baking soda and lotion.

You'll want to use a 1:4 ratio of baking soda to lotion; I mixed 1 cup baking soda and 1/4 cup lotion, which made a nice, manageable mess of snow. 2 cups baking soda and 1/2 cup lotion would probably give you a good amount to actually build and construct with or share among multiple children. Stir the two ingredients together until it clumps together and you can easily pick it up with your fingers.
I was hesitant of this recipe at first because my son is prone to eczema, and I was worried about the baking soda causing irritation; however, he had no issues. Texture wise it's a bit smoother than kinetic sand. We got out a lot of our play-doh tools, which made for an overall successful sensory play experience.
